Ed Brubaker's Angel of Death

ed-brubakerEd Brubaker is one of my favourite comic book writers, and he’s at his best writing dark and gritty crime fiction. Angel of Death is his new direct-to-Internet series staring Zoë Bell of Death Proof fame. It is, naturally, a gritty crime series, in the vein of the classic pulp novels (or to stick with Bru’s body of work, the comic book Criminal). Go watch it.

What’s really cool is that tomorrow episode two will be out. Most web series stick with the episode-per-week format, or even less frequently than that. Angel of Death is going to have a new episode every weekday until it’s complete. It’s a cool thing for a d2I project to do, considering there’s really no reason to stick with the standard television tropes, even though most do.

Aside from Zoë Bell, expect to see some really cool guest stars in the series, like Ted Raimi and Lucy Lawless (who’s part Bru wrote specifically for her). I’m really stoked for this show, it’s a genre I love and one that Hollywood proper hasn’t given nearly enough love in recent years.

angel-of-deathI’ve seen a ton of people tweeting about this today, though granted I do follow a lot of people from the comics industry who are good friends of Bru’s, but I’m hoping that this will get the following it deserves. It’s a bit different, and some of the editing choices took a bit to get used to (though the split screen with the gun in the middle was excellent, as was the ‘getting the gun from the briefcase’ bit) but I really enjoyed the first episode, and knowing Bru’s work I’m really excited to see where this will go.
