Smallville's on the Move.

Tom-Welling-tom-welling-2706807-318-400Sometimes, part of being a tv blogger and fan is admitting you’re way off.  I really thought I had it all pegged down with the CW.  I thought the extension of Smallville was going to support the prolongation of Supernatural to a potential 6th season (I didn’t think that would happen but thought the network thought that would happen.)  This also led to the death of Reaper being slated with 90210.  God, everyone really gave up on Reaper before it even finished huh?  I guess you have to consider it’s been done filming for almost a year now.   BUT I’m all wrong.

With last week’s upfront’s we’re starting to see the face of next season, this for the CW is a season without the Thursday night powerhouse they’ve been rocking for the past 4 years.  Smallville is departing to Friday nights, right before Dollhouse will air on FOX.  If you intention is to be a good lead in to a show on another channel, this was probably a good move.

I’d be concerned about what this means for Supernatural but I’m not sure it will be that much of a problem.  Smallville’s numbers are fading, while SPN’s are picking up.  Maybe putting a Vampire show before it, (I’m assuming it’s about vampires with a name like Vampire Diaries) will bring in a new audience that will be game for the hell play expected from SPN in the coming season.

Putting Smallville on Friday nights is the network admitting it’s gone on too long.  For years it’s been the only defence they’ve had against the big networks Thursday night blockbuster line ups.  Unless they catch onto the hardly impressive Dollhouse numbers, this move will lead to Smallville’s fans watching online.

My personal feelings on it are disappointment.  I watch about 5 hours worth of TV on a typical Thursday night but I always made a point of sitting down to my favorite team of Smallville and Supernatural.  It’ll be a hard sell to get SPN fans into a new show and the vampire audience is an admittedly younger one, not to mention vampire shows have been done, and done pretty well.  We’ll see.

One Response to “Smallville's on the Move.”

  1. Reaper finished filming season two back at the end of December. 😀

Industry insiders confirm Hollywood Reporter’s article that ABC Studios is actively trying to sell Reaper. Syndication is a very real possiblity right now, but EVERYONE is recommending writing your affiliates! Help out! All details here: http://community.livejournal.com/reaperdmv/46875.html
