J/DB's 12 Days of Lists – Day 3 – Best Freshmen Shows

2009 saw a surprising number of quality shows premiere, and I thought I’d take a look at the best of ’em. No cheating here, if something (like Leverage) had a few eps in 2008, it won’t be on the list. So here you are, the best shows that haven’t been on the air for a full year yet:

1.) Party Down

party down listAnother triumph from Rob Thomas, Party Down is an absolutely hilarious cable sitcom in much the style of The Office, but done far better than The Office has been the last couple years. It’s great to see the VMars crew back on TV, and hopefully word of mouth will turn Party Down into an Always Sunny-style sleeper hit. Anyone heard anything about when the second season airs?

It might have been canceled, but the fact that we even had a second season for a show as unique as this on network television is pretty impressive to me. The plot has certainly evolved quite a bit from where it began just over twenty episodes ago, and the journey has been very interesting. I know Whedon’s said that he doesn’t see Dollhouse working in another medium, as you’d lose the whole draw of seeing the actors become different characters each week, but the world they’ve built is expansive enough that I’d really like some expanded universe stuff in the future.

I know I wasn’t much of a fan at first, but honestly I think the fact that the first season was only six episodes hurt the show, because every single episode of the second season has been solid. Really, really funny stuff and a worthy successor to The Office. I should also mention how hard it was to cull this list to just three. I literally rolled a die to determine if P+R, Warehouse 13 or Eastbound & Down would be the third entry, they were all that good.
